How to Remove Date Stamps and Timestamps from Photos

Old film cameras, early digital cameras, and even some modern smartphones burn the date directly into the image โ€” usually a glaring orange "1998 07 22" in the corner. Here's how to erase it cleanly with AI.

Why Date Stamps Are Stuck in the Image

Date stamps are baked into the image pixels at the moment of capture. Unlike EXIF metadata (which is hidden until you read the file), the date stamp is part of the photo itself. There's no setting to "turn it off" after the fact โ€” the data underneath the orange digits is gone, and you have to reconstruct it.

Most affected: 1990s film cameras ("DATE" mode), early digital point-and-shoots, and recent budget action cameras. Some modern smartphones still offer date burn-in as a setting, especially in "heritage" or "retro" camera apps.

Step-by-Step

  1. Scan or photograph the print, or open the digital file. Make sure the image is at least 800 pixels on the long edge.
  2. Open BigImg Watermark Remover.
  3. Upload the image.
  4. Drag a tight rectangle around the date digits. Include 3โ€“5 pixels of padding on each side โ€” gives the AI cleaner reference.
  5. Click Remove. Wait ~10 seconds.
  6. Download. The corner should now match the surrounding background.

Tricky Cases

Date stamp over busy background

If the date sits on grass, gravel, or foliage, the AI may produce slight inconsistency in texture. Solution: zoom in (use the upscaler first to enlarge) so the AI has more pixels to reference, then process. Re-downsample if needed.

Date stamp on a person's clothing

The AI usually handles this well โ€” it understands fabric folds and patterns. Be sure your selection includes a few pixels of clean fabric on each side.

Date stamp partially obscured by something else

If a tree branch or person partially covers the date, you can usually still process it cleanly. Just draw the box around the visible date pixels โ€” the AI fills only what you mark.

Bonus: Recover the Original Date

Before erasing, screenshot or note the date. Then add it back as proper photo metadata using a free EXIF editor (or just rename the file to YYYY-MM-DD-event.jpg). This way you keep the chronological information without the visible stamp.

Print or Reuse the Cleaned Photos

After date stamp removal, scanned old photos are usually too low-resolution for prints larger than 4x6". Pair this with the upscaler at 2x or 4x to get back enough resolution for an 8x10 frame, family album, or social media share.
