Free Passport Photo Maker: Turn a Phone Selfie Into a Compliant Photo
Drugstore passport photos cost $15-20, take a detour from your day, and half the time the lighting is terrible anyway. Here's how to make a fully compliant passport or visa photo at home in about a minute โ plus the compliance rules that actually get photos rejected.
๐ฏ Shortest path
Take a selfie against any background โ open the ID photo tool โ pick your country's size โ white background โ download. About one minute, free, no app install, no watermark.
Make my photo โBelow: the compliance rules that actually get photos rejected, size tables, and printing tips.
Why photos get rejected (the real reasons)
Passport agencies reject photos for a short list of predictable reasons. From most to least common:
- Shadows on the face or background. The #1 killer. Face a window (soft, even daylight) and stand a step away from the wall.
- Wrong head size or position. Each country specifies how much of the frame your head must fill โ e.g. the US wants 1"โ1 3/8" from chin to crown in a 2x2" photo. This is exactly what auto-positioning tools solve.
- Glasses. The US banned glasses in passport photos in 2016. Most other countries allow them only without glare. Simplest fix: take them off.
- Expression. Neutral, mouth closed, eyes open, facing straight ahead. A slight natural smile passes in most countries; teeth generally don't.
- Over-editing. Beauty filters, skin smoothing, background blur โ automated checks compare your photo against the one taken at the border. Keep it unedited except for background and crop.
How to take the photo
- Camera at eye level, 1โ2 m (4โ6 ft) away. Ask someone to take it, or prop your phone โ arm's-length selfies distort facial proportions.
- Face a window in daylight. No flash, no overhead-only lighting.
- Any background works โ the AI replaces it. A plain wall is still the safest starting point.
- Head and shoulders in frame with margin above your head. The tool crops precisely; give it room to work with.
The one-minute workflow
- Open the BigImg ID Photo tool and upload your photo
- Face detection runs in your browser (the photo isn't uploaded for this step) and marks your face
- Pick the size โ US Passport 2x2", UK/Schengen/Japan 35ร45mm, and 20+ more presets โ and the background color
- Generate, then download either the single photo or a print sheet (4ร6" / A4) with cut guides
After generating, you can switch sizes and colors instantly without re-processing โ useful if you need both a US visa photo and a Schengen one from the same shot.
Size cheat sheet
| Document | Size | Pixels (300 DPI) | Background |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Passport / Visa | 2ร2" (51ร51mm) | 600ร600 | White |
| UK Passport | 35ร45mm | 413ร531 | Light grey / cream |
| Schengen Visa | 35ร45mm | 413ร531 | White / light |
| Japan Passport | 35ร45mm | 413ร531 | White / plain |
| China Passport / Visa | 33ร48mm | 390ร567 | White |
| Australia Passport | 35ร45mm | 413ร531 | White / light grey |
All of these are built into the tool's preset menu โ pick one and the crop, head position, and dimensions are handled for you.
Printing: skip the photo counter markup
Download the print sheet version โ a standard 4ร6" (or A4) layout with 6โ8 copies of your photo and thin cut guides. Any drugstore photo kiosk or online print service will print a 4ร6 for under a dollar. Cut along the guides and you have a year's supply of passport photos for the price of one drugstore photo.
FAQ
Is a homemade passport photo actually accepted?
Yes โ agencies specify requirements (size, background, head position, lighting), not who takes the photo. The US State Department explicitly allows home photos. What matters is compliance, and that's exactly what the auto-positioning handles.
Can I use it for online applications like DS-160?
Yes. The US visa presets output 600ร600 px digital files, which is what DS-160 expects. If a form has an unusual file-size cap, re-save the JPEG at slightly lower quality.
What happens to my photo?
Face detection runs entirely in your browser. The background-removal step processes the image on a server; result links expire within an hour and photos aren't stored.
Baby / infant passport photos?
Lay the baby on a plain white blanket and shoot from directly above, eyes open. Upload as usual โ if face detection struggles (it happens with very young infants), retake with more even lighting.
