Why photos get rejected (the real reasons)

Passport agencies reject photos for a short list of predictable reasons. From most to least common:

1. Shadows on the face or background. The #1 killer. Face a window (soft, even daylight) and stand a step away from the wall.
2. Wrong head size or position. Each country specifies how much of the frame your head must fill — e.g. the US wants 1"–1 3/8" from chin to crown in a 2x2" photo. This is exactly what auto-positioning tools solve.

Is a homemade passport photo actually accepted?

Yes — agencies specify requirements (size, background, head position, lighting), not who takes the photo. The US State Department explicitly allows home photos. What matters is compliance, and that's exactly what the auto-positioning handles.

Can I use it for online applications like DS-160?

Yes. The US visa presets output 600×600 px digital files, which is what DS-160 expects. If a form has an unusual file-size cap, re-save the JPEG at slightly lower quality.

What happens to my photo?
